There is something magical in watching your favourite movies with your significant other from the comfort of your bed or sofa. It’s a very special moment that both of you can share and experience together. But often, it can be hard to decide what kind of movie you want to watch. A drama? Too sobby. A detective movie? It can get boring. What about comedies? Or better yet, romantic comedies? Romantic comedies are great, especially when you watch them with someone you love. So, here’s a list of some of the most underrated romantic comedies to grace the cinema industry.
1. Playing it Cool, 2014
Number one on our underrated romance movies list is Playing it Cool. This relatively new film is a goldmine of cheesy dialogues and funny moments. The main stars are Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan, so you are in for a treat with this one. The plot of the movie goes as follows: a wanna-be philanthropist man (Evans) approaches a hot woman (Monaghan) at a charity dinner just to find out that she’s engaged. As the story progresses, things get complicated. Go watch it yourself as this is spoiler territory.
2. Leap Year, 2010
Leap Year is another one of those underrated comedies that should have received more attention. The main story in this one revolves around an old Irish tradition. Basically, in Ireland, there is a day called Leap Day. On this day, a man can receive a proposal from a woman, which he cannot refuse and absolutely must accept. With Amy Addams on the forefront along with Matthew Goode, you’ll get around an hour and a half of quality time. Give this one a ride, it really is among the best-underrated comedies out there.
3. Something New, 2006
If you’ve been looking for a non-conventional rom-com story, then look no further than Something New. With Simon Baker (of The Mentalist fame) and Sanaa Lathan (a veteran in the romantic comedy scene) as the main stars, you know that you will have a nice time. The story revolves around an accountant Kenya McQueen who decided to go on a blind date with a freelance landscaper Brian Kelly. They soon meet again at a party where Brian managed to impressed Kenya with his architect’s work. Kenya then proceeds to hire him and this is where the story unfolds fully. In our opinion, the cast alone is a reason to watch it.
4. Just Wright, 2010
Just Wright is one of those films that look and sound as if they were based on real-life events. The cast includes Queen Latifah as Leslie Wright and the rapper Common as Scott McKnight. The plot, on the other hand, revolves around a professional basketball player that received a career-ending injury and a therapist that is trying to put him back in shape. The acting, the main turning point, the story, all feels so real and so relatable. You will love this one.
5. Timer, 2009
Here’s the main idea of this movie. If you had a timer that would count down to the time you’ll meet your soul mate, would you like to know when? This isn’t a conventional rom-com film. It is more of a science fiction movie. But it is without a doubt one of the finest underrated romantic comedies ever. The story revolves around three characters, namely, Oona O’Leary, Steph DePaul, and Mikey Evers. Both Oona and Steph are friends but Steph has a very interesting lifestyle of one-night stands, which is something Oona doesn’t really like. Oona then gravitates more to the local grocery store clerk Mikey Evers.
6. Someone Like You, 2001
The story in this one revolves around a woman who is trying to figure out why she was dumped and what she did wrong. The story is very funny and draws attention from the very first second. It starts with a voice-over talking about a bull and a herd of cows, where the bull doesn’t mount the same cow twice. You get the idea. The cast on this one is also great as we have Hugh Jackman, Ashley Judd, and Greg Kinnear. A solid film that is worthy of your attention.
7. Mystic Pizza, 1988
The oldest one on this list, Mystic Pizza was released in 1988 and remains a cult classic among all romantic comedies. This is also the film where Matt Damon made his debut, although in a minor role. In any case, the story in this one revolves around two teenage sisters who are coming of age. One is into a local architect and the other is already dating a guy. We suggest that you rent a Blueray or something and watch this one. Despite its age, it is very relevant and very funny at times.
8. Think Like a Man, 2012
You know you’ll have a good time when you see a movie is named “Think Like a Man”. The main story of this film is divided into four smaller stories, and each is revolving around a couple. One is called “The Mama’s Boy” vs. “The Single Mom”, the second is “The Non-Committer” vs. “The Girl Who Wants the Ring”, the third is “The Dreamer” vs. “The Woman Who Is Her Own Man”, and finally, “The Player” vs. “The 90 Day Rule Girl”. It’s one of the coolest underrated romantic comedies that explores all kinds of relationships. Give it a shot, you might learn a few things too.
9. Love, Rosie, 2014
Love, Rosie is a movie about friendship that is turning into something more than just hanging out together. At the time it was released, many viewers called it unoriginal and dull. But in all honesty, we are convinced that it can happen to anyone. This one definitely belongs to the underrated romance movies list. The story revolves around Rosie and Alex who have been friends since they were five. They were separated multiple times but one day, things changed.
